Margaret Boswell
Piano Department Chair and Administrative Director
Biography
Margaret Boswell is a pedagogue, pianist, and composer based in the Boston area. As a passionate educator, she is the co-founder of Attacca School of Music in Belmont, MA where she is proud to lead the school as Administrative Director and also maintain her teaching studio. Her strong affinity for piano and teaching stems from her love of exploring the pedagogy of the piano and building lasting relationships with her students to help them pursue music in a holistic and gratifying way.
As a composer, she gravitates towards writing in a way that shows respect for structure and form and showcasing harmonic language that provides a connected experience for the listener and is idiomatic and enjoyable for the performer.
Her Trio on a Ukrainian Folk Song - written in 2022 as an homage to those affected by the war in Ukraine - has been played around the world at numerous fundraising concerts and music festivals. Her Meditation for Violin and Piano was originally premiered in Boston MA in April 2024, internationally debuted in Cremona, Italy in July 2024 and since played again by violinst Liubomyr Senyshyn and Steinway Artist Derek Chiu in Boston in September 2024, recorded in Boston in 2025 by Violinist Liubomyr Senyshyn and pianist Paulius Pancekauskas, and performed by violinist Kevin Lefohn and Steinway Artist Derek Chiu in Spring 2025 in Orgeon. Her other works have been performed by Sybarite 5, the Amernet String Quartet, Duo con Fuoco, the Horzsowksi Trio, Ensemble Uncaged, and the Longy Conservatory Orchestra. As well as concert music, Margaret’s past portfolio has included the soundtrack for short film titled ‘Chasing Kites,’ and as a singer/songwriter, she has been heard live on NPR affiliate WTMD’s The Baltimore Hit Parade radio show and co-wrote an EP with her Atlanta based band Halter Kids. Her studies have included compositional instruction with Dr. Joel Davis, Dr. Mark Lackey, Dr. John Morrison, and Dr. Paul Brust, and piano instruction under Dr. Kathryn Fouse, Esther Ning Yau, and Mana Tokuno.
Teaching Philosophy:
As a teacher, I am passionate about working with students of all ages and guiding them towards achieving their best and fostering an appreciation for studying music. At the core of my approach are three pillars: trust between student and teacher, the development of healthy technique, and the cultivation of critical thinking. I believe that learning music is one of the best avenues for students to engage with challenges as opportunities for growth and self reflection. By creating a supportive environment where students feel safe to explore and take risks, I encourage them to build resilience and confidence.
My ultimate goal is to nurture a lifelong love of music while helping each student reach their highest individual potential. I aim to balance joy and discipline - fostering creativity and expression while setting clear goals that allow enjoyment through consistent progress. As both a pianist and educator, I am committed to continually expanding my own knowledge through ongoing study and engagement with current pedagogy and performance. This dedication allows me to offer my students the best of my abilities and to adapt my teaching to their evolving needs.
