Long Okada

Biography:

Long Okada is a Boston-based violist and baroque violinist whose work spans solo, chamber, and orchestral performance on both modern and period instruments.

A passionate advocate for British music, Long frequently programs viola works by composers from across Great Britain in his solo recitals. He also performs with Duo Gwynne, a recipient of the Artist Fellowship from Music for Food, and has appeared in concert series throughout the United Kingdom and the United States. As a freelance musician, he performs as both a violist and violinist with professional orchestras across New England, including the Cape Symphony, New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, and Bangor Symphony Orchestra.

As a devoted instructor, Long has taught private lessons and ensembles in a variety of school settings and currently works with dedicated and curious students of all ages and experience levels, from kindergarten students taking their first lessons to advanced students preparing for auditions, as well as adults returning to music or discovering it for the first time.

Long earned degrees from New York University and the Royal Academy of Music in London, pursued further studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Longy School of Music of Bard College, and completed the Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music (LRAM), a teaching diploma focused on violin and viola instruction in both individual and group settings.

Outside of music, Long enjoys swimming, exploring antique shops, and serving as an active member and volunteer at his local Episcopal church.

Teaching Philosophy:

My teaching combines high technical and musical rigor with a supportive and encouraging environment where students are challenged to think critically, explore creatively, and develop confidence as dedicated and curious musicians.

Drawing from my own musical journey as well as the established pedagogical approaches of Simon Fischer, Shinichi Suzuki, and Karen Tuttle, I primarily focus on classical viola and violin repertoire while integrating technical exercises, ear training, sight-reading, and body percussion to help students develop strong, well-rounded musicianship and a deep understanding of classical music. Students from my studio regularly take on active and leadership roles in their school orchestras and are accepted to and perform in selective youth orchestras.

A key part of my teaching is working collaboratively with students to help them learn how to think, rather than simply telling them what to do. I ask open-ended questions and encourage students, even from the beginning of their musical journey, to reflect, elaborate, and share their own insights. Above all, I strive to prepare my students not only for success in auditions, competitions, and advanced study, but also to inspire a lifelong love of music that brings curiosity and joy both within and beyond the practice room.
